Set out on a mission to find an elegant and sustainable solution to solve the tiny house conundrum.
Drawing inspiration from the most famous South African alive at present, Elon Musk, we set out to establish a business that would help solve a significant part of the worlds’ problem. Sustainable Housing.
We have been tracking the growing trend of the “Tiny House” movement and are seeking a perfectly sustainable solution. Building and transport technology are not quite there yet, but we have made significant strides to achieving this. We have made it our company’s mission to solve this problem through continued research and development.
Traditional or early version Tiny Houses and Modular Builds include the use of converted shipping containers and converted trailers. These utilize a composite walling, flooring and roofing, and mostly rely on building materials such as wood, aluminium IBR sheeting and Corston Steel.
There are significant downside considerations when it comes to construction using these materials:
-
The wood often needs to be pressure treated with CCA which includes a cyanide poison protecting the timber from insect attack.
-
When dew point temperature is reached on the steel of shipping containers, condensation congregates within the air pockets between the insulation and the steel.
-
Reduced lifespan due to the condensation and resulting rust at the base of the internal envelope of the container.
-
Containers are not thermally efficient. Steel is a good conductor of temperature and therefore requires a lot more insulation.
We wanted to create a building module that ticked all the right boxes:
-
Solves a waste problem by recycling plastic, locking the carbon away into the structure.
-
Has the longevity of a conventional building
-
Is comfortable
-
Is wider than a shipping container and lightweight for easier transport and installation.
-
Constant and dependable high quality
-
Can be ON or OFF the grid
-
Modular
-
Stylish and functional
-
Inspires a sense of endless adventure
Inhabit is the result of many hours of contemplating various building materials and building systems. We have a constant exploratory process, continual assessment and rigorous elimination process, until we reached what we believe is our perfect module design.
“By solving problems now, it means we get to live in a more inspiring future” - Elon Musk
